The State Of Graphic Design In Jordan
Jordan's unique geographical position results in their experts to choose development, which includes graphic design. Experts are also involved with developments in neighboring countries, and the Internet was very useful in the implementation of those involved in these two areas in contact with each other and the sharing of development possible. The development of graphic design is also supported by the annual exhibitions and conferences held both in Jordan and elsewhereArab world.
The academic and professional specialists in the base for the development of graphic design through the formation of local educational institutions. In these institutions, scientists, programmers and graphic design by professional designers, teachers can meet and discuss the nature of the business is moving forward, and labor market needs.
The practical training is the basis for graphic design, to have the academic skills of students and their creativitybuilt. Working in a design office is the most important and effective instrument for the measurement of academic learning. There is also an indication of the effectiveness of teachers in the production of a generation of students able to deal with the academic ethos and addressing the needs of the profession. This course gives students the opportunity to polish and develop their skills by working alongside established practitioners. Today's Graphic DesignTools rely on information technology for the production of visualisations of scientific development. This visualization requires an understanding of scientific theory and the visualization tools available, which is in turn based on the expertise of graphic designers.
In this paper I will focus on the profession of graphic design and development by discussion of their early development. I will review the positive and negative aspects of this development and how it changes in the correspondingMarket and the size of the market and the workforce. I will also provide scientific concepts, and the commitment to graduate graphic designer.
In this work I draw from my experience of working in Jordan since 1987 on the establishment MIDAS and my role in student education at Yarmouk University and the University of Applied Sciences, which I had hung since 1999. This paper deals with many issues and aims to improve the mechanics of graphic design in the academic Explore and professional sectors.
The initial phase of the historical and technical graphic design in Jordan
Developed graphic design, in addition to the printing and information technology. Printing was in Jordan in the 1940's learned from people who had brought the trade with other countries. Jordan's pressure development was similar to that of other countries. Printing started with wooden forms, then zinc plates and letterpress printing, and other> Printing tools, symbols and shapes. It was the printing technology that limits the possibilities for producing new designs. The range of printed items is limited to newspapers, cards and stationary. Printing started mainly in black and white, and then developed to make photo clichés of the print the printer in the position in color. Typolography or increased pressure was the main method and is still used today. Offset the pressure intensifiesQuality of production and provide for improvements in color and image reproduction. Around the same time, the role of graphic designers is designed to prepare the mock-ups and then film editing and plates for printing ready) to be (pre-press, which on the professionalism of the film assembly technician to prepare the background for the alleged pictures and words. Prepress regarded as the most important process in the manufacture of printed items. ThisProcess has been in the prepress service center, which was conducted at a single institution is limited to 1987. This center has the capability and technology are a set of techniques, where an artistic touch was required.
In the late sixties, design engineers were not graphic designers, but had learned the technology of collage and calligraphy. They were able to imitate designs from abroad, and in some cases, they reproduced. Their work initially ranged from greeting cards,Business cards, social stationary, letterhead and envelopes, is then advanced that brochures and leaflets. The work was confined mainly to advertising, the newspaper was based primarily on the offset printing method. We should not forget the airbrush technique provided that designers were limited to the use of graduated colors to achieve three dimensional effects for some designs, even though the number of people using it.
From 1980-87 design was carried out by specialists in plasticArt and architecture, and the first graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts at the University Yarmuok and similar facilities. Until the late eighties, the computer was Linotype as publishing tool used by newspapers to prepare the text for the layout and add it to the desired site in addition to advertising. Some publishers have graphic design companies, which also purchased these systems for the production of books and magazines to ensure a similar quality. Linotype has also been used to prepare Designing brochures and promotional material that can not be hand drawn. Over time, Linotype was used for the manufacture of other material by this method, including greeting cards, posters and advertisements.
The design and printing found the computer to operate an effective means to improve productivity. In 1988, increased with the arrival of the first design of Apple Macintosh computers, the number of workers in the area and performance advances in the pre –> From the precursor to cinematography and separation. But the cost of computers meant that it was still very limited use. The production of competitors to Apple's Macintosh personal computers as well as the ease may be processed with the film through its programs, has been a huge increase in the number of professionals interested in the graphic design. This was evident by the growth in the number of agencies, design firms, publishers and service centers.
Staffaffected machines, the technical and artistic aspects of production. Some plants were able to expand their skills and by the recruitment of experienced designers and develop through the organization of training courses. These highly qualified individuals achieved high standards of work, both within Jordan and were able to compete with others in the Arab territories and captured a share of these markets, produce many publications. Jordanian experts has been serious competitors againstother Arab countries that were previously a monopoly of the areas of design and printing has. Jordan is developing so that it can meet the demand for design and print within the country. Jordan is a magnet for many publishers in the Arab region. Many production and publishing organizations have been caught in the position to the content of the latest technology. There are numerous indications that they continue to develop, is equipped with modern production tools, and this willsure there are plenty of local specialists who can continue to produce a work of high quality.
The pace of technological development made it necessary for the academic institutions of the Jordanian market with professionals who can work to provide the required high level. These organizations must constantly adapt to the evolution of technology, and assist the scientists in their effort to the artistic, scientific and technological aspects of production and to improve thePublishing. Relations must be strengthened through cooperation between management and scientific institutions to the mutual benefit of improving standards, with the ultimate goal, to keep pace with local and international developments.
The easiest way to improve the quality of design and printing in a country where judges is published by the newspapers, magazines and books. Television is also a showcase for the visual communication through the locally producedAdvertising. The printing speed development on the montage of graphic design and the designers themselves. Designers have continually update their education in order to keep the latest state of the art. This allows them to be at the forefront of improving the quality and creativity in all aspects of production.
The pros and cons of sectors associated with graphic design
In discussing the design and manufacturing organizations in Jordan, she is involvedare simply overwhelmed by the diversity and abundance of them. These organizations to saturate the market. One of the reasons for the number of organizations is the variety of production formats, each of which has its own structure. Computerization has lead to many operators will be made unemployed.
Production sources can be divided;
- Design
- Commercial printing
- Publishers
- Pre-press Service Center "
–Computer Software Training Centers
These are the organizations in which people are often looking for a graphic designer, although most of them have no academically trained staff who specialize in graphic design. Many of the people that these organizations have chosen to specialize own. Some of them specialized, because the occupation does not require a large capital outlay, other experts, because they had knowledge of the tools used. Most people seem to have specialized for thus obtainedthem with the status in their community.
While there are many organizations lacking in graphic design, the workers and owners of these holdings is often too little awareness of the professional graphic design concepts, because they have not thoroughly studied the subject. Vacancies for graduates began only after 2000, when some organizations recognized the need to develop such professionals and academic institutions, the experts were able to produce this standard. TheImpression of graphic design graduates has changed, so that companies no longer the choice of graduates who studied abroad. Design firms who can produce the high quality of products, the trained graduates with the skills and abilities to use notes, and their ability to the full spectrum of design and printing presses. Without this structured training had been gained through experience hap-hazard on the job training.
One of the weaknesses of thesePreparation of the designs is that they do not always leave out about how you use the latest techniques. They often ask advice and prefer to work within their comfort zones, would in the absence of designs, a lot of time, effort and care to produce. The graduates are much more comfortable with change and willing to develop new skills. There are a few experts, however, which have been invaluable for the development of graphic design through the training of others and develop their own technical andprofessional qualifications. These people have also monitored the pace of development in the fields of printing and graphic design.
Many professionals have found themselves thoroughly the high quality of work they produce. This is not possible without a location aware and educated body of people who are creative and scientific evidence and not as an imitation of the work of others.
The growing gulf between the designer and academic employer or art directors, andcreative managers are often on misunderstanding of the role of the artist. In industry, the priority of some designers and agencies is the owner of profitability regardless of the quality of the results.
The first problem is that some of the art directors and creative managers are not aware of the importance of their position, and often the employer is also not known. Job titles are often arbitrarily so artistic or creative managers often lack experience andKnow-how.
There is no common language between academic designers, and managers or employers. This frustrates many designers, creates uncertainty and impedes creativity. Such an environment may be an attempt to reduce a designer "status and restricts him from the inclusion of creative thinking he would be taught and university.
Adequacy of the professional reality
Graphic designers from other fields as one of the most importantcreative professions, they work with information technology and visual communications. It also means that you are needed with the business world in which credibility and ability to achieve the creative work. Skills and talents are for this software.
A graphic designer is not only an artist but also a technician is able to use software and techniques to manage the project in hand. His approach was to go about communicating with the public to ensure effective promotion andDisplay. His goal is to create clarity and he should be able to do this from the information on the techniques available to him. The goal is to connect the data connection and to do so must be the development and design of the software that could be understood to be used. He has to understand all the innovations and methods of design of texts.
The design sector requires professionals who have experience in a position to choose and create the classification of information and the links between relatedElements. This will not be enough if they do not interpret and transform it into specific shapes. It is also important to understand the vocabulary of language, sound and music, as they are the primary means of communication. In addition, the developer must understand how to use the special design software to write lyrics, to prepare drawings, cartoons and websites. The designer should know about design, timing, transition, rhythm and visualPresentation.
The potential of the design sector should be achieved by knowledge of the necessary theories and techniques to improve communication with the audience, enriching the drafts and to understand the reflective aspect of the design process, studies and research.
There are large differences in the qualifications of the staff in the design sector. It is important to distinguish between the artisan and the academic designer. The Graphic Designer is a complete cultural andspiritual unity, is found in the sensational theory, linguistic theory, visual eloquence and the cultural history of art, literature, science, technology, industry and humanity. You can not isolate themselves from developments in the theories of communication, information development, and from management and criticism. Moreover, the added value of the final product that uses all the methods and tools in the production and release, understand better. You need to understand the stagesbefore the draft, and they need to better understand the printing process and its impact on the design.
The market is full of people who crowded into graphic design. Through the extensive use of graphic design in many areas of work, packages the widespread use of computers and the availability of basic software, there is a role for people with graphic design without prior knowledge. The expression of graphic design is still not sufficiently understood by some employers in the industry andcommercial companies and organizations that need graphic design services.
I do not doubt the potential of the professional sector, but that is the reality of graphic design. It must be remembered that well-qualified people today occupy high status positions in the Jordanian market, demonstrates its expertise and its ability to demonstrate the highest graphic design.
The size of the market and the people who live in Graphic Design
There are now more than five hundredEstablishments in graphic design. There are many who do not have to refer to themselves as an agency, center or office, as they have found their niche. Therefore, these classifications are not useful to be applied in Jordan.
The industry is large in comparison to the market. The introduction of a new graphic design organizations in 1999 reached its climax. Since then, some have fallen, while others expanded. Some have stagnated or changed management, while others have merged.
ALook at the design sector, show that 85% of those who can be classified in the field as;
- Computer science graduates
- Architectural Graduate
- Interior design graduates
- University graduates in the fields of "Computer and Art" of Community Colleges
- Visual Arts graduates (both graphic design professionals and non-professionals)
- Graduates of design courses run of data centers
- Unemployed persons who are interested in computer
UniversityEducation Graphic Design graduates play an important role, since;
- Universities produce graphic designer with a different perspective to the above.
- Organizations of people who understand graphic design is executed in a better position to develop, design skills and the future
I am studying for students that graphic design at the university, but do not try to improve its rate of innovation and creativity in order to improve the data. This will affect whether heTo improve employability.
Academically and scientifically gifted students will have little problems, because becoming an employer of students who are able to use ideas quickly form on the appropriate design for its ideas and programs must be able to produce them. Other organizations are only useful for the academic designer. These are the push-pull level of the graphic design sector, which reflects the levels of awareness about the concepts and functions of graphic design.
The market is in a position to absorb allGraduates. This is due to the development of visual communication methods through depending on graphic design. This development requires the presence of professionals capable of taking the needs of the market. This provides incentives for schools that are planning to design to meet the graphic design market.
The scientific reality of graphic design
The emergence of academic institutions that specialize in art began at the University of Yarmouk, where the firstArt and Music Department was founded in 1980. This was in 2001, a faculty, teaching, drama, design (industrial, interior and graphic design), visual arts and music. The University confers bachelor's degrees. It began in 2001 at the height of the computer revolution in the design sector in Jordan. Graphic Design Education in 1991 began as an independent specialization within the Arts Department at the University of Applied Sciences. This was followed by the University Ahiya Amman, the PetraUniversity, Philadelphia University, AlZaytouneh University, the University of Jordan, and later the Israh University.
Apart from universities, during the time that graphic design has been popular and profitable profession, community colleges began teaching graphic design. These included the Al-Quds College, Granada College, University College Middle College and Princess Alya.
The work of the universities, the bachelor's degrees awarded is comparable to universities, the granting of two yearsDiplomas, because both to produce students with a certificate in graphic design. But in reality, where it concerns creativity and technical skills, we find differences. The differences are in the curricula and the understanding of production, product identity, the knowledge of software and design innovations.
There is a likelihood of confusion between graphic design and visual arts. These differences relate to the students, especially when employment in the. He is judged by both itsCreativity and innovation used in the production of new ideas and his ability, technology, already in the computer, the main graphic design tool.
The reason for this disparity is evident when we look at the number of workers in the market and where they studied. During the time that will be the largest number of graduates produced, were graduates of the highest quality well-known institutions, and these were recruited by the most successful companies.
ADistinction between engineers and designers developed. This is because some universities to focus on the technology and the practical aspects of design software, while others develop the capacity, knowledge and know-how to connect ideas to the psychological and social context as well as qualitative studies of theories and design curricula.
The reasons are;
- The lack of specialized academic experts in graphic design and the poor quality ofSome of the teachers.
- The lack of an appropriate study plans for the creation of a graphic designer
- The lack of a system to determine the role of universities and colleges in the teaching of graphic design
- The lack of entry studies graphic design courses, different courses in the arts specialization
- The lack of connection to the outside world, other than through books.
- Do not understand Some universities and colleges, the concept of graphic design in an industrialContext.
- The lack of official support for the government to find a way to establish a core curriculum courses.
I have taught in the art departments of a number of universities and have reviewed many of closing operations. This gave me the opportunity to discuss graphic design theory, the standards of the students, and showed the need for appropriate curricula. There is a lack of competitiveness, improve educational standards and it would be aindiscriminate use of teaching methods. Targets may be obvious, but often results in errors in the corresponding not about the teaching methodology that they will not be achieved.
To develop and improve the graphic design sector needs qualified and competent workers. The workers are not able to respond to changes in technology, if they have a formal academic training. To achieve this, further development, it is important that students be used as a graphic-designSpecialists.
Conclusion
It is a requirement in the Jordanian arena for academic and vocational area to check their experiences and their own strengths and weaknesses. This is a strategy which they are capable of graphic design the prestigious position which they are earned.
It is a condition for government intervention to the arena where specialists in the field of graphic design, many of the concepts that make them entrepreneurs can help discuss provideand know managers do like the optimal use of the graphic designer.
In addition to teaching graphic design, universities and community colleges, the markets need for assistance to designers and craftsmen in the new specializations will be introduced to reduce unemployment.There is a need for a professional body in graphic design to give support, designers must to coordinate educational and technical preparation and for making contacts with the outside world. It is important toTo hold workshops and symposiums that the competence of teachers, designers and students to increase and these should be kept with the help of international institutions that are respected in this field.
It is also important to keep the national and international competitions, to foster creativity and innovation. This will be able to develop to create a competitive atmosphere in the graphic design.
Finally, it is important to create a national identity in graphic design, the cementits position in the international arena.
